How to Pick a Giveaway Winner Fairly (Instagram, TikTok & YouTube)
Giveaways grow your audience fast – but only if people believe the winner was chosen fairly. One accusation of “rigging” in the comments can undo weeks of goodwill. This guide shows a simple, transparent way to pick a giveaway winner on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube or any other platform.
1. Write Clear Rules Before You Start
Fair winner selection starts before the first entry. In your giveaway post, state:
- How to enter (for example: like the post, follow the account, tag a friend).
- Whether multiple comments count as extra entries.
- The closing date and time, including the time zone.
- Who can enter (country, age) and how the winner will be contacted.
- That the winner will be picked at random on camera.
Platforms have their own promotion rules, and prize draws are regulated differently around the world, so check the current guidelines for your platform and country before launching.
2. Collect Every Entry
For small giveaways you can copy usernames from the comments by hand. For larger ones, export comments with a tool you trust or collect entries with a simple form. Paste them into a spreadsheet so you have one username per row.
3. Clean the List
This is the step most people skip – and where most “unfair” complaints really come from.
- Remove duplicates unless extra comments are allowed by your rules.
- Remove anyone who broke the rules – for example, didn’t follow or entered after the deadline.
- Remove your own team and family if your rules say they can’t enter.
4. Pick the Winner on Camera
A visual spin is far more convincing than a number appearing in a spreadsheet. Start a screen recording, show the full list and the odds, then spin. Keep recording until the winner pop-up appears.

If people earned extra entries (for example, one extra entry per friend tagged), add a weight such as @username | 3 and say so in your rules. Hidden weighting is never fair; visible weighting can be.
5. Draw Backup Winners
Winners don’t always reply. Turn on elimination mode and spin two more times for a second and third place. Announce that backups exist and how long the first winner has to respond.
6. Share the Proof
- Post the screen recording in a Story, Short or Reel.
- Include the Draw ID shown under the winner – it’s a unique fingerprint of the result, the list and the time.
- Keep the downloaded results CSV with your giveaway records.
Platform Notes
Instagram: giveaways with many comments are easiest to manage with an exported list. TikTok: pin a comment with the rules and record the draw as a follow-up video. YouTube: run the draw live on stream so viewers can watch in real time.

FAQ
Is a spinning wheel a fair way to pick a giveaway winner?
Yes, as long as the list is clean and everyone has the same chance. Our wheel uses cryptographic randomness and shows exact odds.
Can I pick more than one winner?
Yes. Set Winners per spin in Settings to draw several unique winners at once.
